วันนี้ไปรู้จักกับ Tate Modern พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะร่วมสมัยที่โด่งดังที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของโลกกันดีกว่า คิดว่าใครที่มาลอนดอนน่าจะเคยมาที่นี่กันทุกคน และคงมีคำถามในใจว่าทำไมอาคารแห่งนี้ถึงได้มีหน้าตาแปลกประหลาดไม่เป็นอาคารแบบสมัยใหม่เหมือนพิพิธภัณฑ์อื่นเช่น ลูฟท์ที่ฝรั่งเศสหรือ MOMA ที่นิวยอร์ค วันนี้มีคำตอบมาให้ได้หายสงสัยกัน
โครงการนี้ได้เริ่มต้นขึ้นในปี 1992 โดยคณะกรรมาธิการ Tate ได้เลือกอาคารเก่าของสถานีผลิตพลังงานมาใช้เพราะลักษณะอาคารที่มีเอกลักษณ์และสถานที่ตั้งของอาคารที่อยู่ริมแม่น้ำเทมส์แม่น้ำสายหลักของลอนดอนและอยู่ตรงข้ามกับโบสถ์ เซนต์พอลล์อันโด่งดังนั่นเอง โดยสถาปนิกที่ชนะการประกวดแบบครั้งนี้คือ Herzog & de Meuron สถาปนิกชาวสวิสเซอร์แลนด์ ด้วยเหตุผลหลักที่ว่าพวกเขาออกแบบโดยคงตัวอาคารเดิมไว้ได้มากที่สุด
ตัวอาคารดั้งเดิมสร้างขึ้นในสองขั้นตอนระหว่างปี 1947 และปี 1963 ได้รับการออกแบบ Sir Giles Gilbert Scott ประกอบด้วยห้องโถงยาว35 เมตรและสูง 152 เมตรและปล่องไฟกลางเดี่ยว
ในปี ค.ศ. 1996 ได้เริ่มการก่อสร้างด้วยทุน 12 ล้านปอนล์หรือประมาณ 600 ล้านบาท เครื่องจักรเก่าทั้งหลายได้ถูกเคลื่อนย้ายออกไป และข้างในรื้อเหลือเฉพาะโครงสร้างเหล็กและผนังก่ออิฐ โถงกลางกลายโถงทางเข้าหลักและพื้นที่จัดนิทรรศการหมุนเวียนและ พื้นที่ห้องทำความร้อนได้กลายเป็นแกลเลอรี่แสดงผลงานศิลปะ
Tate Modern ได้เปิดตัวในเดือนพฤษภาคมปี 2000 มีประชาชนมากกว่า 40 ล้านคนได้เข้าเยี่ยมชม Tate Modern และกลายเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวติดหนึ่งในสามที่นักท่องเที่ยวต้องมาชม สร้างรายได้เข้าสู่ประเทศประมาณปีละ 5,000 ล้านบาทซึ่งเป็นการลงทุนในด้านศิลปะที่คุ้มค่ามาก ในระยะยาว

This is Tate Modern Museum of Contemporary Art, one of the most famous of the world. I think everybody come to vitsit London will come here at all. Do you know why this building is not unusual to have to look like a modern museum building, for example. Louvre in France or MOMA in New York .Today I have to answer for you.The former Bankside Power Station was selected as the new gallery site in 1994. The following year, Swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron were appointed to convert the building into a gallery. That their proposal retained much of the original character of the building was a key factor in this decision.
The iconic power station, built in two phases between 1947 and 1963, was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. It consisted of a stunning turbine hall, 35 metres high and 152 metres long,
In 1996 the design plans were unveiled and, following a £12 million grant from the English Partnerships regeneration agency, the site was purchased and work began. The huge machinery was removed and the building was stripped back to its original steel structure and brickwork. The turbine hall became a dramatic entrance and display area and the boiler house became the galleries.
Since it opened in May 2000, more than 40 million people have visited Tate Modern. It is one of the UK’s top three tourist attractions and generates an estimated £100 million in economic benefits to London annually.

Rirkrit Tiravanija เป็นศิลปินชาวอเจนติน่าและทำงานศิลปะโด่งดังที่อเมริกา เขามักจะผลิตผลงานที่ผู้เข้าชมได้มีส่วนร่วมในงาน งานชิ้นนี้เขาแสดงการผัดไทยซึ่งเป็นอาหารที่คุณยายทำให้เขาทาน เขาผัดและส่งให้ผู้เข้าชมหลังจากแสดงเสร็จผลงานของเขาก็จะถูกนำเข้าไปโชว์ในพิพิธภัณฑ์ต่างๆทั่วโลก หนึ่งในนั้นอยู่ที่Tate Modern แห่งนี้ ชื่อผลงานคือ Untitled,2005 (sleep on earth,eat on sand)
